Indigo Tie Dyeing

Indigo blue is a natural dye extracted from the indigo plant which grows in tropical countries, it is a light-fast and wash-fast dye, which is why it is a popular dye. It is an interesting process to prepare the indigo dye vat, then immerse the fibres for a while, the blue is only activated once it is removed from the vat and oxygen reaches the fibres. Many fascinating patterns can be created on fabric with a range of techniques including stitching, folding and tying with threads, rubber bands, clips etc.

Indigo Tie Dyeing Workshops

Prepare and dye fabric samples in an indigo dye vat, using varied tying, stiching and folding techniques to make attractive patterns, including Japanese shibori. You will be assisted with designing your own combination of patterns on a tote bag, scarf or piece of fabric be used in another project. You take home both the sample pieces and the item you dyed.
All materials and equipment will be provided. Wear clothes that you don't mind getting messy, or bring an apron. You may also like to bring your own small garment, like a t-shirt, a similar size piece of fabric or some yarn to tie and dye in the indigo vat.
