Rag Rug Making
Rag rug making was common in UK households up to the middle of the twentieth century, they were made by using worn and discarded scraps of fabric on a background of old sackcloth. This type of rug making became widespread during the Industrial Revolution to the nineteenth century. These inexpensive rag rugs are locally known by different names including proddy or hooked rugs. They are made by prodding, poking or hooking short or long strips of fabric through a backing cloth made of hessian, sisal or other types of sackcloth. A range of methods and tools have been used to produce this type of rug.
