Natural Dyes

Throughout history, people have dyed their textiles using common and locally available materials, this is a fascinating way of adding colour to fabric and yarn.
Natural dyes are made by using a variety of plant materials and their various parts including leaves, flowers, roots, tree bark and kitchen waste. The use of mineral salts as mordants, such as alum and iron, can also help to fix the dye and increase the variety of shades and colours.

Natural Dyes Workshops

Naturally dye yarn and fabric in heated dye baths and use mordants, including alum and iron, to add variations and help to keep the dye washfast and lightfast. The dyed yarn and fabric from our dye pots will then be used to produce a colourful sample swatch, for you to keep as a record and use for future reference. Also, choose a tote bag, scarf, fleece or piece of fabric which has been naturally dyed during the session to take home.
This workshop aims to teach you the basics of natural dyeing for you to gain enough knowledge and confidence to continue natural dyeing independently.
All materials and equipment are provided. Wear clothes that you don't mind getting messy, or bring an apron. You may also like to bring a small garment, like a t-shirt, a similar size piece of fabric, or some yarn to put in one of the dye pots.
This workshop are suitable for beginners.
